Whether you have an electric, gas or real wood burning fireplace, you should have a mantel around it to give it definition and style. The mantel can be used for traditions such as hanging stockings for Christmas and during the rest of the year be a great resting place for a variety of seasonal knicknacks. The mantel usually matches the wood in the rest of the room, if not the entire home, although you can also do painted mantels if you so choose.
